Open Letter to Senator Bill Nelson

(This email was sent to Florida Senator Bill Nelson today)

Dear Senator Nelson,

As a fellow veteran I have respected your service to our country both in the Armed services and NASA, and now in the Senate. You have done an admirable job to make sure the people of Florida are properly represented.

Recently though the president and the congressional leadership have made your job harder and harder. The President’s budget plan dealt a blow to the space coast of Florida and the future of NASA. Now the President’s new plan removes the protections of Florida’s Medicaid recipient service that you fought to have included in the original healthcare reform bill.

Because of these policies that go against the wishes of the Florida people and against the stances you have taken as part of your desire to serve as a Senator. You need to publicly pledge to vote against any health care reform bill that does not meet the needs and desires of the people you have been elected to represent.

Thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing your response.

  1. Here is the auto response I got:

Please do not reply to this e-mail. If you need to send another message to Senator Nelson, please use the form on his Web site: http://billnelson.senate.gov/contact/index.cfm#email

    Dear Mr. Coville:

Thank you for contacting me about health care reform. Last December, I voted for the Senate’s version of a health care bill, known as the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

Regardless of where anyone stands on the specifics, I think we all can agree that the system we have can be unfair and too costly, and needs to be fixed. Although the Senate bill is not perfect, it contains a number of reforms that are necessary if we are to have any chance at expanding access to health care, while reducing the costs over the long term. This bill is now awaiting action in the House of Representatives, which may take a vote within the next two weeks.

Again, I appreciate hearing from you on this important issue. Please don’t hesitate to contact me in the future.

    Sincerely,
    Senator Bill Nelson

  2. I have found Senator Nelson to be generally uninformed on substantive points regarding legislation he supports. I have also found him to be unresponsive to my very specific requests that he explain his policy positions. I voted against him the last time he was up for re-election and I honestly can’t fathom how such a man can be a U.S. Senator because, as far as I can tell, he doesn’t seem to like actual Americans very much.
